Université Protestante au Congo provides education that builds a nation
Founded in 1959 by several Protestant mission groups, Université Protestante au Congo (UPC) is among the pioneers in Congolese higher education.
Based in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, the university has grown from three students to 8,000 students and five schools—Medicine, Law, Business, Computer Science and Theology—over the last 60+ years.
The university has endured civil war, famine and collapsing economies, forcing multiple relocations… but it endures, and UPC is producing leaders to build a nation.
Producing more women leaders!
Not just male leaders, but UPC is bringing women to the table! In the past two decades female students have risen from around 25% to over 55% of the student body at UPC. This is huge—especially in such a historically patriarchal society.
In 2023, one of UPC's graduates, Dr. Fatuma Ngongo Kilongo, was named the first female rector (president) of Université Evangélique en Afrique, the other university we support!
Strong history, stronger future...
UPC produces doctors, lawyers, business people, theologians and technology experts. The computer science department is the newest, and is currently being expanded.
From the beginning, the university’s leadership, faculty and students have distinguished themselves through a record of achievement as illustrated by:
- Creating a self-sustaining higher education business model;
- Attracting a student population that includes more and more women;
- Recruiting predominately Congolese faculty, many of whom received their undergraduate education at Université Protestante au Congo; and
- Producing alumni who become leaders.
Even in a country that ranks near the bottom of the United Nations Human Development Index, the university remains an independent, private and self-sustaining institution.
This vibrant university is working to build a nation through education that will position its students as the future leaders of Congo.
